Your Linux VPS can be reached over SSH once it has been set up. You need:
- the server's IP address: log in to the client area, open Services and select the VPS;
- the username
root; - the root password you chose when you ordered.
Windows 10 and 11
Windows includes an SSH client. Open PowerShell or Command Prompt and run:
ssh root@YOUR-SERVER-IP
You can also use PuTTY. Enter the IP address in Host Name (or IP address), keep port 22, select Open and log in as root.
Mac and Linux
Open Terminal and run:
ssh root@YOUR-SERVER-IP
The first time you connect
You are asked whether to trust the server's key. Type yes if you are connecting to your own server's IP address. Then type the root password. Nothing appears on screen while you type it; that is normal.
If you cannot connect
- Check the IP address, and check in the client area that the VPS is running.
- If you moved SSH to another port, give the port:
ssh -p 2200 root@YOUR-SERVER-IP - If you changed the firewall or network settings and lost access, see How can I reach my VPS if it has lost network access?
- If you have lost the root password, open a support ticket. We answer within one working hour, Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30 (Lagos time).
Once you are in, secure the server. See How to Protect Your VPS from Malware and Hackers.
