FTP is not open on our shared hosting server at the moment. The way to upload a large file today is cPanel File Manager. It works in your web browser and needs no extra software.
Upload with cPanel File Manager
- Log in to cPanel at https://cloud.lurstanhost.net:2083 with your cPanel username and password.
- Under Files, open File Manager.
- Open the folder the file should go in. Your main website lives in
public_html. - Select Upload in the toolbar. The upload page opens in a new tab.
- Drag the file onto the page, or select Select File and choose it. Tick Overwrite existing files only if you mean to replace a file with the same name.
- Keep the tab open until the progress bar reaches 100%. Then select the Go Back link to return to File Manager.
Many files, or a whole website
Uploading thousands of small files one by one is slow. Put them in a single .zip file on your computer first. Upload the zip, then right-click it in File Manager and choose Extract. Delete the zip once you have checked the files.
How large can the file be?
The file must fit in the disk space left on your plan:
| Plan | Disk space |
|---|---|
| Starter, or WordPress Basic | 10 GB |
| Business, or WordPress Professional | 40 GB |
| Business Plus, or WordPress Pro | 100 GB |
The cPanel home page shows how much space you have used, under Statistics on the right.
Hosting space is for your websites and their email. It is not for backups of other systems or for file sharing. See our Acceptable Use Policy.
A large upload over a slow or unsteady connection can stop part-way. If that happens, split the files into several smaller zip files and upload them one at a time. If it still fails, open a support ticket with the file size and the folder it should go in. We answer within one working hour, Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30 (Lagos time).
FTP settings, once FTP is open
When FTP is available on the shared hosting server, use these settings in an FTP program such as FileZilla:
- Host:
cloud.lurstanhost.net - Port:
21 - Encryption: explicit FTP over TLS (in FileZilla, Require explicit FTP over TLS)
- Username and password: your cPanel username and password, or an FTP account you created in cPanel under Files > FTP Accounts (its username looks like
name@yourdomain.com)
Use cloud.lurstanhost.net as the host, not your own domain. The server's security certificate is for that name, so you will not get a certificate warning.
